Points Policy

Everything you need to know about our completely imaginary points system

๐ŸŽฎ The Short Version

Our points are completely made up, don't get you anything real, and are just for your own personal tracking and fun. They're basically meaningless internet points!

What Are These Points?

The "points" you see throughout Folk Technica are a completely arbitrary gamification system designed to make reading articles a bit more fun. Think of them like:

  • Gold stars on a childhood chore chart
  • Participation trophies
  • Reddit karma (but even less meaningful)
  • The points in "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" where the points don't matter

What Points Don't Do

Our points system explicitly does NOT:

  • โŒ Give you any real rewards, discounts, or benefits
  • โŒ Accumulate in any database or account system
  • โŒ Transfer between devices or sessions
  • โŒ Unlock any premium content or features
  • โŒ Have any monetary value whatsoever
  • โŒ Grant you special status or recognition
  • โŒ Get you early access to anything
  • โŒ Matter in any objective sense

How Points Are Assigned

Point values are assigned completely arbitrarily, loosely based on article length:

  • Short articles (~8 min read): ~50 points
  • Medium articles (~15-22 min read): ~100-150 points
  • Long articles (~25+ min read): ~150-200 points

But honestly, we might change these on a whim, assign points based on how we're feeling that day, or just pick random numbers. They're that arbitrary.

Your Points, Your Business

Since points don't persist anywhere on our end, tracking them is entirely up to you. You could:

  • Keep a running tally in a notebook
  • Use a note-taking app on your phone
  • Create a elaborate spreadsheet (we respect the dedication)
  • Just enjoy the confetti animation and forget about the number entirely
  • Ignore the whole system completely

Future Plans

Currently, there are no plans to make points:

  • Persistent across sessions
  • Redeemable for anything
  • Connected to user accounts
  • Part of any rewards program
  • Meaningful in any way

Could this change in the future? Maybe! But right now, they're just for fun.

Why Do This At All?

Because sometimes it's nice to celebrate small accomplishments, even imaginary ones. Reading a thoughtful article about technology takes time and attention. If a little confetti animation and an arbitrary number makes that feel more rewarding, great!

Plus, we thought it would be fun. And in a world full of serious technology analysis, a little harmless silliness never hurt anyone.

Questions About Points?

The answer is probably "they don't matter" but feel free to contact us if you have specific questions about our gloriously pointless points system.
